This cuvée is issued from La Mothe; a small, young, North facing parcel made up of clayey-limestone. We are lower in a valley than sister parcels, sitting at just under 200m above sea level. Here we have a blend of two vintages; 70% 2016 & 30% 2017. In the 2017 vintage, spring frost resulted in particularly low yields, hence the decision to combine with the previous vintage. The grapes aren't de-stemmed and vinification takes place is steel, as does ageing. Pierre rather prefers vinifications in whole, favouring extraction of fruit and balance of stem tannin through shorter macerations. Bagatelle is aged for 11 months in stainless steel. Here we find the same charisma as Pierre other wines, the soul of Merlot with an edge. More blackcurrant, black cherry with undertones of less ripe raspberry. There is persistent herbaceous undertones some tomato leaf and red pepper. We start to see suggestions of age, developed verticality of fruit underripe to jam, fresh earth and black olive. Acidity and body balanced, the finish is bright and tense.
